Mindy is a 30-year-old executive assistant who lives in the Harbourfront area. “I don’t have a lot of spare time, but I like to eat out, see shows, and play music when I get a chance,” she says. Mindy, who has been single for six months, says her dating life is “shitty,” and that she is still searching for her “big spoon.” She met Luke on OkCupid.
I wasn’t instantly attracted to Luke when I found his pictures online. He wasn’t a gargoyle or anything, but he just wasn’t the type of guy I would usually get together with. I ended up messaging back and forth with him one night before heading out the door to meet a friend for dinner. He suggested that we meet up within the hour, and that I should just tell him where to go.
I liked the way Luke acted on the fly, so I blew off my plans and went to meet him. We met up at a bar close to his place. He had texted me asking what my drink was, and it was there waiting for me when I arrived.
Right away, I let down my guard and was totally honest with him, which was different than how I usually act with most guys. I told him that I was recently separated and had two kids, fully expecting him to run for the hills, which everyone else does. It’s usually like, “OMG! A woman who had a life before meeting me. Crazy!”—so his non-reaction was a point in the pros column for him.
But, as the night wore on, Luke got more and more drunk, and louder and louder, and I realized how short he was. We also seemed to have nothing to talk about. I was like, “I’m done here,” but I had about three hours before I had to get home, so when he invited me to his place I said, “I guess so.” I made it clear that I wasn’t going to have sex with him.
The apartment was nice and super clean, which was a bonus for sure. He made me a drink, and we sat on the couch to watch TV. I was just chilling when Luke asked if he could kiss me. I didn’t really have anything to lose—I had already decided to never see him again—so we kissed. It was the best kiss I have ever had. The connection was mind-blowing. I couldn’t get enough; I just wanted to devour his face. I can honestly say it set off fireworks. We made out like we were in high school. A little while later, though, he basically passed out, and I had to leave.
We went out on a few more dates, and we ended up hating each other, at least romantically. He is now a good friend, and has helped me through a lot of things. It’s a little weird, because I see Luke about five times a week, and the sexual chemistry is really intense, but it’s for the best.
