Recently launched, anonymous Tumblr blog takes an irreverent look at our city's escalating housing prices.
Anyone who’s waded into the soul-crushing world of Toronto real estate in the past few years is well-aware that finding decent digs for a reasonable price has become a monumental task. Which is why, in this undeniably WTF moment in local real-estate history, it’s nice to stumble upon a small reminder that you’re not alone among the legions of discouraged renters longing for a plot of land to call their own.
FML Listings, an anonymous Tumblr blog launched last week, is the work of a clearly very frustrated would-be homeowner who is documenting the most outrageously over-the-top prices he or she discovers on Realtor.ca.
Everyone knows real-estate prices are through the roof in neighbourhoods like Rosedale and Forest Hill, but the genius of FML Listings is the way it identifies stunningly expensive properties in areas you might not immediately think of as being too rich for your blood.
We mapped the blogged-about properties on FML Listings as the site stands this afternoon, and an instant analysis of the locations therein reveals that Toronto’s most surprisingly expensive hood (at least according to this blogger’s taste) is south-central North York, in the area that stretches from Bathurst to Bayview, roughly from Wilson to Finch.
We suspect the monumental prices in this area have something to do with its suburban feel, with expansive lawns and a multitude of backyard pools lending the area a distinctly Oakville-type vibe, with the added value that these houses are only a roughly 45-minute TTC trip from downtown.
Whether this FML Listings sweet spot changes as the site’s proprietor turns his or her attention to other options, we’ll have to wait and see.
