As TIFF gets underway, it’s time to roll like an A-lister and wash everything down with bubbles. Here are three sparklers from Vintages for a rush-line budget.
Reyes d’Aragon Brut Reserva Cava 2009, $13.95
Some 95 per cent of Cava comes from the Penedès region; this bottle from Bodegas Langa is one of the few exceptions. Try it with fish and chips.
Ponce notes: “The bouquet conjures challah toast smeared with spiced apple butter. Smooth and creamy, it’s a touch sweeter than the average Cava, making it less of a food wine and more of a quaffer.”
Domaine de Vaugondy Brut Vouvray, $16.95
Made with Chenin Blanc, sparkling Vouvray fills flutes in France’s Loire Valley. It’s terrific with take-out sushi.
Ponce notes: “Aromas of wet hay and lime zest may not tempt the average tippler, but this wine is far more appealing on the palate, with fall-orchard fruits, crisp bubbles, and lively acidity.”
Jean Geiler Rosé Brut Crémant d’Alsace, $18.95
From France’s Alsace region, Jean Geiler makes wines from a co-operative of 175 grape growers. Try with a salad of arugula and goat cheese.
Ponce notes: “The nose brings back memories of strolling through the Ex with freshly spun cotton candy. While its confectionary qualities are not typical for Alsatian bubbles, this bottle will appeal to the Prosecco crowd.”
