Tastes like chicken…and waffles

We are going to suggest you eat a chicken-and-waffle donut made by a bakery called Glory Hole. Bear with us.

In late 2009, pastry chef Ashley Jacot De Boinod left her job at Buca restaurant to focus on her passion: donuts.

She now runs Glory Hole Doughnuts out of an industrial kitchen in Kensington Market. For the time being, her oversized treats are available only through retail at Thor Espresso Bar and Burger Bar—they sell out within hours. Look for them in more cafés this year.

Let’s get serious here. We all know that the word “RACY” is generally used in a sexual context. Tattoos are no longer “RACY”…..didn’t you hear? Everyone is doing it now…..one of us, one of us…lol. Trying to get the negativity to stop is like trying to end “the war on terrorism”…..you can’t….and so with that being said, this is my last comment because I have better things to do with my time then to post on blogs all day long. Not like the lot of you though…..you all apparently have ALL the time in the World to post because you feel that it’s your God given right to make small business owners want to shoot themselves in the brain!

The problem with posting on these blogs/sites is that you don’t have to reaveal your true identity. You therefore take no responsibility for your comments.

The other issue is that becasue many food shows are now on television, everyone thinks that they are a “Chef” or a “Foodie”. Reality check, live the life of a Chef and you shall be one. You CANNOT become a Chef just by watching “Iron Chef”.

DM was correct, I meant it based on her extensive ink and no that is the arm of a typical female in Toronto. It was not sexual comment.

As far as being a foodie. For me the big thing is the name, I don’t need to be a cooking school grad to know it is cheap and disgusting.

As far as the desire for her donuts, again, I know what my taste buds prefer and that isn’t it. To each their own. I know people who travel across town to have her donuts, just not me.

If it were my perfect world, she would go by a different name, open a shop, and make a zillion kabillon dollars. Hopefully along the way she will make a donut I love too!

I’m so sorry you feel that way about someone you have never met or spoken to. You absolutely CANNOT judge someone based on their appearance. This women works her fingers to the bones day and night to create her product. She deserves all the respect in the World. I am so horrified that the people of Toronto can be so cruel and horrible. She is also a HUGE animal lover and picks up many, many strays off of the streets and fosters them. How can someone who takes in lost or neglected animals be such a “monster”. She is just trying to lighten things up in Toronto. Have a laugh in life, because it’s too short to be constantly angry and bitter.

My judgement is not based on her appearance. She looks fine to me. My comment is that the name is a disgrace and that is what I judge her on. I am glad that she looks the part of someone racy and therefore the world hasn’t completely spiralled out of control. If she opens a shop by that name I will resent her when my young family members ask me what the name means and when a pervert sees it and feels just a bit more normal.

First as a donut lover let me say these are not all that. She does not understand when good is good enough. These treats lack the balance of flavour and texture to make them special. 4 out of 10 is generous.

Secondly, I agree the name is unfortunate, actually very unfortunate. I find it funny that Lovely Lady thinks racy is being used in a sexual way when just as she described, the donut woman is dressed up to her eyeballs. Wouldn’t that make you think it could be one of the other many uses for the word racy? I figure they are talking about all the ink up and down her arms, no?

She looks racy eh! In her Chef clothes…..what a sexual uniform. Her oversized Chef Coat showed off ALL of the right parts? In what way does she or did she in the interview look at all racy? I suppose if she were wearing nothing but a push up bra and underwear then and ONLY then could you make a comment like that however, she was covered up from neck to toe. Atleast she doesn’t shake her booty and whatever else she has like some of the pop starts out there. Perhaps that is what you should be disgusted with and maybe that’s the kind of content you shouldn’t be showing your little ones. A doughnut shop is a doughnut shop. Surely children can enjoy a treat as well…..they’re not going to be asking why the name is Glory Hole, they’ll be asking why they can’t go in and enjoy a treat with their Father no? Just get over it and enjoy them instead of making a huge stink about it.

While I have not tasted Glory Hole’s sweets, and I can barely say ‘glazed donut’ without blushing, I can vouch for the amazing donuts at The Depanneur made by Carol Dudar of bakelab. This weekend was cappucino raised donut with espresso-maple glaze and chocolate cake donut with peanut butter glaze. Last week it was Meyer lemon curd-filled yeast donuts topped with Italian meringue & red velvet cake donuts with cream cheese glaze. http://on.fb.me/wCzHGZ

Nothing special

I’ve tried a bunch of her doughnuts and, honestly, the doughnut itself is pretty bland and dry. The batter should be great but it ain’t and so the doughnut mostly serves as a delivery system for crazy toppings (which all-too-easily fall off) and I expect more from a “gourmet” doughnut. Check out Doughnut Plant in NYC, Glory Hole (Worst. Name. Ever) has a long way to go.

Sadly, I agree with you. I had high hopes for Ashley’s much hyped doughnuts but when I tried the chicken and waffles doughnut at 416 Snack Bar I was really disappointed. Like you noted, the toppings fall off easily. The chicken was cold, dry and frankly nasty considering it must’ve been sitting on the counter all afternoon. And the wafer used as the “waffle” was just not tasty at all. The biggest problem is the batter. It’s just not that special. It tastes like a Tim Horton’s doughnut.

But that’s just my opinion, many other people seem to love her product so different strokes for different folks. Best of luck to her. As far as gourmet doughnuts go, I prefer the ones supplied to Lost & Found store and The Depanneur.
