I knew you were all going to tell me about alternatives, but I was refering to being at someone’s house, or a restaurant, or a party, or a picnic, or where ever and turning down all the food. I’m not going to be that guy. No one likes that guy. And there is still the buy local thing that vegans ignore.

Thanks for the article and thank you Gene Baur for spreading the word about veganism. There’s no single choice we can make as consumers that can have a greater impact on the environment (lower greenhouse gas emissions, less pollution of waterways from runoff, much smaller consumption of land and water resources), our health (the consumption of meat and the way we raise it has been linked to antibiotic resistance, bird flu, swine flu, heart disease, cancer, to name a few) or on the lives of animals (Google factory farming if you need any convincing).

I tried going vegan for a year and I couldn’t do it…I have either allergies or reactions to most fruit (especially raw) and some vegetables. I can’t eat wheat, legumes, and am especially sensitive to both soy and agave (or anything cactus…no tequila for me. I’m also allergic to cow’s milk but good with goat and sheep. Unless I eat rice and very little else, I have no choice. I really wanted to be vegan too…all my friends were at the time.

You can also feed about 17 times more people by going vegan, so given this, the limited amount of arable land on Earth, growing world populations and climate change, we know that in the future everyone will be vegan.

No pressure Buck D – there are vegan options for all the things you mention!

Vegan worchestershire sauce – try Pick-a Peppa sauce
Birthday cake – easy to make an egg-free, dairy-free cake!
Same with pie, cookies, etc.

Get a good cookbook from the library, or look up recipes online.

Great article and I agree that we should all stive towards compassion and treating animals as our equals as we are also animals. Kudos to him and his organization as well as PETA for putting it out there are forcing us to deal with our choices.

So true! He was also an artist, so we should abolish that, too. Oh, and he drove cars, wore clothes, liked naked ladies at his birthday parties… ban strippers! They’re Nazis!

Oh, and Buck D… check out “Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World” or any number of great vegan cookbooks out there before you start spazzing about how much pressure you feel.

Veganism is great in concept, and I applaud it. However, if You are going hardcore, that means no Worcestershire sauce because of anchovies, no ceasar salad because of anchovies and eggs, no pizza beacause of cheese, no birthday cake (eggs), no pie/cookies (eggs in crust/dough), no parmessan cheese on spaghetti, no scrambled eggs for Saturday breakfast, no real cream in coffee, no chicken wings, no pepperoni on pizza, no fish & chips, so that’s way too much pressure on me to weed out all those things. No civilization has ever survived over the course of human history on fruits and vegetables alone. Try being a vegan and buying local only, good luck with that. More carrots and potatoes, anyone?
