The city’s food scene continues to diversify with the May 5 opening of Lamesa Filipino Kitchen at 669 Queen St. W. (at Bathurst). Not that Filipino restaurants don’t already exist in Toronto (try Sampaguita Village or Casa Manila), but Lamesa is the first offering a modern take on the food in the downtown core. For the past few weeks, chef Rudy Boquila and business partner Lester Sabilano (he’s also one of the people behind The One clothing line) have been serving up test dinners inside the former Rosebud spot. We snagged a table last Friday through the restaurant’s Facebook page, and had a healthy sampling of what might end up on the opening dinner menu.
On this night, there were takes on the kare-kare, pancit, turon, and lumpia with swirls of banana ketchup, the latter of which is so tasty it could be the next Sriracha. Here’s hoping there will be halo-halo for the hot summer months.
