Okay, St. Rémy a la Crème isn’t exactly a cocktail ingredient, but cream liqueurs are an absolute essential this time of year for two reasons. First, they make for a better gift than a box of generic chocolates and, second, this is the one time of year that it’s not perceived as desperate to add booze to your morning coffee. Take full advantage.
This year, there’s a new product at the LCBO—made by the good people at Remy-Cointreau and, as we might expect, with a brandy base rather than the usual Irish whisky. The good news is that it’s worth breaking brand loyalty for: To our small sample of tasters around the breakfast table, it was pronounced better than Bailey’s and is actually two dollars cheaper. It’s a little less sweet and cloying and tastes slightly more grown-up. Which makes seasonal morning drinking seem even more refined.
