Barbancourt Rhum (LCBO 256321) is a fan favourite with rum connoisseurs, but it has a spotty record for regular availability at the LCBO. Most covet the eight- and 15-year-old versions of this lovely Haitian elixir, and I’m sorry to say that they are not in stock these days to, as the kids say, “represent.”
In their place, however, we have a four-year-old stand-in—obviously not quite as smooth and polished as its elders, but still interesting in its own right. Barbancourt is one of the few rums made from sugarcane (as opposed to molasses) and, as such, has a distinctly different taste from many rums.
This offering is light, dry and slightly tannic and would do extremely well in any number of cocktails, especially for those who wish to tone down the sweetness in tropical and tiki drinks, so popular and refreshing this time of year. And at $27.35 (two dollars off regular price for the entire month of June), it’s a pretty good deal on top of it all.
