I would be remiss not to point out that Avion, the tequila that Vinny Chase and the gang so shamelessly plugged on Entourage, has finally made its way to the LCBO.
We’ve seen some blatant product placement on cable dramas in the past (Glenlivet and Grey Goose were regulars on The Sopranos), but, in the TV producers’ defence, it was always claimed that liquors were chosen to further develop and define characters and that no money changed hands.
Similarly, it seems likely that Whistle Pig rye whiskey didn’t fork out any cash for its long, gratuitous cameo on Breaking Bad. Payola aside, though, that seemed forced, especially since we feel certain Hank would opt for a sweet bourbon over the more esoteric and slightly over-priced (in our opinion) Vermont rye whiskey (not yet available in Ontario, incidentally).
Still, nothing compares to Avion on Entourage, a product that got itself a whole storyline in Season Seven—admittedly, a season that aired after pretty much everybody had stopped watching. Its casting was reportedly gratis, since the show’s producer and the owner of Avion were old pals.
The big question is whether or not it’s worth the $69.95 the LCBO is asking. And frankly, that’ll depend on personal taste. This is a tequila going after the vodka market—soft and smooth, almost to a fault. We like our tequila blancos a little more crisp and complex than Avion but, for those—like Turtle—who don’t want their taste buds too profoundly challenged, it will serve as a good introduction to the spirit.
