Plating up the week’s restaurant news, featuring the closing of Bistro 990, the opening of the Trump tower's Stock, and winter renovations at Chippy’s Fish and Chips.
Openings
■ Roncy’s newest restaurant is sure to attract crowds: The East Coast–inspired Hopgood’s Foodliner (325 Roncesvalles Ave., at Grenadier) is the creation of Geoff Hopgood, the former chef of Hoof Café.
■ It seems like there’s an arms race between Roncesvalles and Ossington in terms of which street can land the best new restaurants. Hawker Bar—a lunch and dinner spot that will serve Singaporean street food with touches of Malaysian, Indian and Chinese cuisine—is expected to open in mid-March at 164 Ossington Ave. (at Foxley).
■ Less than a month since construction began, Lucid Cocktail and Kitchen (571 Queen St. W., at Portland) is now open. Its huge cocktail menu includes drinks cooled by liquid nitrogen. For food: wood-fried pizzas and house-baked breads smeared with darn good, truffle-scented chive butter.
■ Stock, the restaurant on the 31st floor of the new Trump tower (325 Bay St., at Adelaide), is now open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
■ Pop-up restaurant Come and Get It opened at 170 Spadina Ave. (at Queen St. W.) last Friday. Here’s how it works: Choose a salad, sandwich or poutine (all under $10), then select the fixings: Hawaiian pork belly, Granny Smith’s chicken Caesar, crunchy green beans or chipotle beef short ribs.
Closing
■ Film festival haunt Bistro 990 (990 Bay St., at Wellesley) has been bought by Cresford Development to make way for a 32-storey condo tower. Maybe the restaurant, open since 1988, can take a cue from The Real Jerk and go viral in an effort to save itself. Altogether now: They paved paradise and put up a condo loft.
Changes
■ Wintertime renovations continue at Chippy’s Fish and Chips, across from Trinity Bellwoods Park (893 Queen St. W., at Gore Vale). A sign posted in the window says that it will reopen on March 1, with a few new items on the menu.
