Finally, it’s barbecue season, and nothing goes down better with burgers or ribs than a cool, bubbly brew. Here are the best of the LCBO’s new summer imports—and some recommendations for what to grill up alongside them.
Pictured from left to right, above:
1. Les Trois Mousquetaires Hopfenweisse
A delicate Québécois wheat beer amped up with lemony, grapefruit hops. Throw some salmon on the barbecue and this ale’s citrus notes will be like a squeeze of lemon on your fish.
2. Thornbridge Kipling South Pacific Ale
Burgers, steaks, or pulled pork—bring on the rich, meaty goodness because this Kiwi-style pale ale has the caramel sweetness to complement the beer’s biscuity malts and the hoppy heft to cut through the fat.
3. Scaldis Blonde Triple
The sweet banana and caramelized pear flavours in this Belgian triple will draw out the salt of a prosciutto-wrapped asparagus, while the ale’s boozy, herbal notes hit a high when they meet the fresh vegetable taste.
4. Cuvée des Jacobins Belgian Lambic Ale
Our favourite summer release, this beer features aged balsamic and sour cherry notes, and puckering acidity from start to finish. It’s perfect for the barbecue’s finale—sip it with the richest chocolate cake you can find.
5. Renaissance Perfection Pale Ale
This made-in-New Zealand ale is an homage to a classic English pale ale, with toasty, caramel notes, a nutty, fruity centre, and earthy, hop bitterness at the finish. Try it with ribs smothered in a sweet, fruity barbecue sauce.
6. Dominus Vobiscum Saison
Grill up some chorizo or Toulouse sausages and see how well the powerful peachy and pepper flavours of this saison dance with the meat’s spices. Its dry finish will help balance the delicious fattiness of the sausage.
