Cars and drivers also constantly are unaware of traffice around them, I think more so than bicycles. It doesn’t matter in the end what you are driving or riding, you should aim to be aware of your surroundings, but it’s unfair to call cyclists out as being worse. I can’t count on both hands the number of times I have seen cars making right turns without checking their mirrors or doing a R shoulder check and barely missing (usually) hitting a cyclist.

Everyone needs to be concious of each other, cars and bikes alike.

Right, I understand what you’re saying, but consider a few things here.

For one, I see no reason why cars–i.e. other vehicles–should have to wait and bikes don’t have to. That’s part of being in traffic. Too many cyclists follow rules when it’s convenient, and then treat themselves as exceptions to these very rules when it isn’t.

But let’s assume you do creep, and that there is a car turning right. What if he decides to jump the turn? You get hit. But even if he doesn’t, he’s going to pull forward a bit, and that makes you passing on the right. Not good.

Why not just stay back, and do what I said in my fifth point above: be assertive. Look behind you, wait for a gap, signal, and move into the left lane until you’re through the intersection. Problem solved.

According to the City of Toronto website, Toronto bylaws allow the operation of human powered bicycles (but not electric bikes) on park paths and trails. Several Toronto bike routes explicitly include park paths as bike facilities: the Don, Humber, and Lakefront to name three. Of all the parks in Toronto, only Edwards Gardens is reserved for pedestrian use as far as I know. Unless you have more examples of cyclists abusing pathways explicitly marked for pedestrian use only, I suggest your accusation of cyclists abusing park paths may involve wishful thinking: in the vast majority of cases, the law gives us the right to ride there.

As for convenient bike infrastructure: darn right. Cyclists won’t ride on paths and trails that don’t go where we want. Same reason nobody flies out of Mirabel. Cyclists should never break the law in search of convenience. As the article says, lawbreaking by cyclists endangers us and other people. However, I see no evidence cyclists break the law any more often than drivers.

Either form of the left turn signal has equal validity. Motorists and other people should recognise either signal.

Extending the right arm to signal a right turn is actually less visible to traffic as traffic is most often to the left of the cyclist, thus the left arm can clearly be seen while the right is obscured by the cyclist’s body. While both the left arm up signal and the extended right arm signal are acceptable, it is “more obvious, more visible, and more logical” to form the signal with the left arm.

Yes! It’s particularly crazy-making when people do that in narrow bike lanes on busy streets, so that any cyclist riding the right way has to veer out into traffic to avoid hitting them. Bike lanes are NOT wide enough for two-way traffic!
