Similar to the combo of hallucinogenic drugs and Magic Eye pictures (remember Mallrats?), sometimes applying a kaleidoscopic filter can actually make more sense of a mind-meltingly trippy experience. Such is the case with this action-packed EP, a free download from local label Hand Drawn Dracula.
Presented as the first installment of many Vicious Circles releases, this five-track effort brings together Toronto’s Holy Fuck, Tokyo’s Shugo Tokumaru and Pittsburgh’s Black Moth Super Rainbow—three groups with a gift for creating entrancing psychedelic soundscapes—to cover one another’s songs. The EP opens with Tokumaru’s cheerful overhaul of Holy Fuck’s “Lovely Allen,” a jubilant orchestral-pop explosion that sounds like an Orff class of kindergarten geniuses. From there, the tracks grow incrementally more bananas—Holy Fuck’s take on Tokumaru’s “Hole in Your Parachute” mixes faint chimes with layered, ambient vocals and a hypnotic beat, while BMSR’s epic album-closing jam transforms Holy Fuck’s “The Pulse” into an otherworldly cacophony of buzzing, laser-synth distortion.
All in all, it’s a symphony of radness.
