Two years after his hugely impressive debut, Twin Shadow (real name George Lewis Jr.) delivers an expansive and overall slicker sequel that’s more of a continuation and less of an evolution from what he’s already perfected.
From the first track in, Confess, which was allegedly inspired by a motorcycle accident, delivers another dreamy dose of emotional and infectious new wave/R&B well suited for the soundtrack of The Lost Boys or Drive. At its best, the album features some of Twin Shadow’s grooviest tracks to date, like the impossibly catchy lead single, “Five Seconds.”
Somewhat regrettably, while things kick off with a bang, the momentum wanes on the less kinetic material, which is mostly relegated to the back end of the album. Of course, these little glitches should all be remedied during Twin Shadow’s dependably outstanding live performances.
Playlist picks: “Five Seconds,” “The One”
Twin Shadow plays Lee’s Palace (529 Bloor St. W.) on July 30 and 31.
