You can practically hear the waves on This Is How We Swim, written while singer-songwriter Lisa Bozikovic was living on the Toronto Islands. Produced by Sandro Perri, Bozikovic’s follow-up to her 2009 debut, Lost August, sounds like it was recorded in an air bubble underwater.
But if you’re looking for a Best Coast–style romp in the sand, keep moving. The album’s cozy warmth and Bozikovic’s gentle but steady voice belie a melancholy that slips around the corners of her twisted melodies and vocal runs. The album’s darkest song, the wonderfully gloomy lead single, “Into the Waves,” perfectly evokes the walking-dead state of a post-breakup depression.
From start to finish, the album is an exercise in restraint; Bozikovic displays a powerful control over her voice, switching from deep murmur to lovely falsetto with complete ease. “I roll with the waves,” she sings on the title track; after a few listens, you’ll feel the same.
Playlist picks: “Into the Waves,” “This Is How We Swim,” “No Monument”
Lisa Bozikovic plays a CD release show at the Music Gallery (197 John St.) on Sept. 7.
