Thanks to a newly signed record deal with ATO Records, the Newfoundland indie-rockers will sew the Seeds of their latest album in the United States in early 2012.
Kudos to Newfoundland’s Hey Rosetta! for securing a mighty US release partner for their fine Polaris Prize short-listed LP, Seeds . The band joins the roster of the prestigious label ATO , which is home to an eclectic group of artists including My Morning Jacket, Drive By Truckers, Gomez and Radiohead (who released a CD version of In Rainbows with ATO in 2008). The label will release Seeds south of the border in February, preceded by an acoustic EP featuring several songs from the record. The band is currently in the midst of an Australian tour and will soon return for an extensive headline trek of North America that includes two shows at the Phoenix Concert Theatre. The November 24th show is already sold out (as are Vancouver and Ottawa, by the way) and less than 100 tickets remain for the November 23rd Toronto date.
GOOD TIMES
Matthew Good has quietly built as impressive a CV of work as any of Canada’s post-’93 alt-explosion artists. The opinionated and articulate singer’s latest, Lights Of Endangered Species , continues in the direction of mood music he and long time producer/collaborator Warne Livesey have been exploring since abandoning the modern rock hitsville approach of Good’s earlier work with the Matthew Good Band. However, the new record is undeniably more upbeat than Vancouver , 2009′s reflective and intense open letter to his hometown, which won a 2009 Juno Award for Rock Album of The Year. Good and his current incarnation of musical friends hit Toronto this week for two shows at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. The Friday, November 4th show is sold out and a very limited amount are left for the Thursday, November 3 date. Good and his bandmates will also drop into The Edge studios at Sugar Beach on the evening of Wednesday, November 2nd for a live session at 7:30pm.
ROCKIN’ LIKE IT’S 1977
1977 was as important a year for music as 1964. It was the year punk and new wave were fully established as major landmarks on rock ‘n’ roll’s twistin’ and turnin’ highway. It’s also the name of a Toronto band that makes music that’s very much in the here and now. 1977 is the vehicle for the songs of Julie Kendall, whose self-titled debut of smart pop tunes garnered a 2010 Juno nomination. With a new LP, Seaforth , slated for release next year, 1977 will release a five-song EP teaser So Is The Sea on November 15th. The songs have a quirky sophistication that makes them infectious and memorable. The band will showcase the tunes at the next installment of the Pop With Brains series on November 25th at the Rivoli.
