Great article, but I have one thing to add; I want the people who vote for the Oscars to be people who really love movies and are paid to see them.

The reason I want this is because the people who select the movies to be awarded seem to have no idea what films are out there. All that they know is what's at the film festivals and what the critics like, which as you said shuts out a ton of movies that should have been awarded. Therefore, instead of the people thahttps://ieonline.microsoft.com/#ieslicet usually are allowed to select films, I propose that AMPAAS hire people to watch movies and pick out the ones that will be awarded.

These people would only be people that know about film (or at lest rabid fans), and not the dentists or lawyers that are usually selected to do this. The person selected would have to have a broad and wide knowledge of film genres, from science fiction to drama, as well as knowledge of technical issues involving film. these people would be paid by the Academy to watch movies throughout the entire year, and only that job, so that they can determine what was the best of the year without only selecting a few movies during and after TIFF. This way, a movie like Iron Man or The Avengers that should have been nominated for Best Picture would get nominated, or a movie like Prometheus that was one of the best sci-fi movies of 2012 (IMHO) would get Oscar noms. This would also have an effect on movies like comedies, which are never nominated for Oscars. I would also have the Oscars be shown on Sundays rather than Mondays, and like the Super Bowl and the Grey Cup, start at around 7:00 PM (all of the red carpet stuff would start at 3:00 or 4:00 PM) with a ending of about 11:30. Technical awards would be a full part of the broadcast, with the tributes to who passed away only on the website.

Other than that, I agree with you (although I'm not too sure about Ricky Gervais being host...)

Call me a socialist, but I've always wanted awards for Best Key Grip, Best Gaffer and (hold your breath) Best Best Boy.

As to the ceremony, the best thing about recent Golden Globes were Tina Fey's on the TV ads, but she didn't wear that dress. Mandatory cleavage for presenters at least, since awardees don't know who they are. The show could then be long enough to show the above three new awards presented, and there'd still be an attentive TV audience.

I hope 1) is meant to be a joke.

So what if past winners are nominated again? If they really did put on a great performance then give them the nomination. Makes it more exciting when an upset happens. And even if there isn't an upset, so be it. They acted great, they win.
