Toronto’s annual Nuit Blanche festivities are all about setting art into motion, so that’s once again how we captured our white night on the town, with this gallery of animated GIFs.
Installation: Telling Stories
Artist: Daniel Barrow. Winnipeg, Canada.

The Reaction: Of course you’d end up at The Drake Hotel for Nuit Blanche. And about 100 other people would end up there to drink their faces off and not give a fuck about art. Shame aside, artist Daniel Barrow (2010 winner of the prestigious Sobey Prize) projected a storybook onto the hotel’s exterior wall with accompanying images and text. They’re called “manual animations, created by projecting, layering and manipulating drawings on an overhead projector.” There are also live performers complete with their own thought bubbles. And a bunch of people cramming into their stretch Hummer limo on the street beneath it. It’s fascinating, and you find yourself standing across the street, reading and observing each of the five chapters…or waiting to see who will throw up first.
Art or…: A high school English lesson?
Overheard: “Why are all these people just standing on the street?”
