Toronto’s annual Nuit Blanche festivities are all about setting art into motion, so that’s once again how we captured our white night on the town, with this gallery of animated GIFs.
Installation: Water Will Be Here, 2010
Artist: Eric Corriel. Brooklyn, USA.

The Reaction: This video installation takes a psychogeographical look at climate change. It puts us in the aftermath of man-made ecological destruction, forcing us to deal with what would happen if seas engulfed cities and we were all, well, drowning amidst melting icecaps. After all, Corriel is both a certified philosopher (in that he has a Cornell degree) and an artist. It’s also a mirror image of itself: while we drowned comically inside of Commerce Court, passersby could clearly view our efforts from the other side of the glass wall on Bay Street. The funniest was when people—like me—didn’t realize we were art-ing for the general public. Some did Jaws. Others did “The Wave.” Otherwise, it was mostly shadow puppets. I wish someone had done Ariel getting her legs for the first time, or at least prayed for our future.
Art or…: Crystal ball?
Overheard: “There are, like, 100 people in line to play with water. I’m not sure.”
