Lights, camera, Harper! The Prime Minister hit Maple Leaf Gardens today to unveil the new hockey arena Ryerson built on the site of an old one.
Last fall, the long-dormant Maple Leaf Gardens reopened with a new, hockey-themed Loblaws; now, the historic former home of the Leafs will be stocking up on actual hockey once again, albeit of the collegiate variety. Today, Prime Minister Stephen Harper was on hand to unveil the Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens, a new, 2,600-person-capacity rink—situated above the Loblaws—that will serve as home ice for the Ryerson Rams. The multi-purpose community facility also features a 1,000-person capacity venue for basketball and volleyball, and boasts the distinction of being the highest elevated skating rink in the city, sitting some 50 feet above street level. Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “air hockey,” don’t it?
