In your 20s or 30s? Neck-deep in debt? You’re not alone: Canadians owe $150.60 for every $100 we make, and young people seem to be especially bad at spending way too much and saving way too little. In this week’s cover story, The Grid associate editor Carley Fortune writes about the rise of “premature affluence,” and on the podcast this week, I asked Fortune what the hell is wrong with us, whether we’re doomed, and whether we can blame Toronto for this.

Millenials, such as who you write about, need to start shifting away from the ‘like parents like children’ mentality, as Baby boomers has worked very hard and done quite well for themselves. While we milk off their efforts, we are quickly realizing that spedning more than we make is not a sustainable life plan. We need to start working with financial advisors that are our age, and start from scratch, re: how to budget, where/what to prioritize. I urge you to use sites like Mint (I always recommend to people I work with, as I am a financial advisor), and book an appointment (its free!) with a financial advisor. Check out the http://www.getoutofdebtchallenge.ca or other initiatives advisors have created for exactly this type of person.
