I'm just worried that yet another afwful looking, glass and steel structure will be speedily built in it's place. Roncies is a real community that thrives without the towering garbage that's taken over the downtown core. We still get sunlight and have independent shops! Anything over 4 stories would be atrocious and invite more traffic into an area that can barely handle the one lane of traffic that it has left! I don’t mind that it’s shutting down. Christie Porter happened to be there and helped out who was back then the newest of the Porter generation to get into the business. It makes sense to close it down, even though I am sad to see yet another of a historical community Toronto funeral home disappear. Their Peel Chapel is large and spacious and can accommodate large services. Don't know who said that the only motivation is money, that's a bit simplistic, but it is a good idea to close a money loser and save the other chapels, but maybe they should keep it open to appease your desire to see it stay and stagnate and slowly go out of business. The bottom line is that they don't need the space for the declining volumes of traditional funerals. The Porters probably held off longer in closing the building than one of the corporate funeral home chains would have. That location was redeveloped to what is now The Bay at Queen & Yonge. If there were NIMBYs back then, there would be no Simpsons and no Bay. But we have, as indicated in the article, moved most of the services to the Yorke or Peel chapel in the past 20 years. I'm home sick with the flu but otherwise I'd be at my mother's cousin's visitation at the Peel Chapel today. Sad but glad to know that the superior service and community committment to families will continue at the other locations. Turner and Porter has been our ‘family’ choice as long as I can remember.
