Almost nobody is using the Sheppard line! I don’t understand why I continue to hear more about building on this line when NOBODY is using it while the rest of the system is SCREAMING for more transit. Just once I’d like to see transit development that makes sense for the long term and not to placate some councillor’s re-election bid in 2 years.

Yes to standing-only trains! They could even have fold-down seats by certain doors and be equipped for wheel-chairs, which would accommodate those who can’t stand on the train while still allowing for much greater capacity.

As others have commented, the concentration of riders in certain stations isn’t the major issue; it’s really a couple of issues during rush hour:

1. The lack of spare capacity – since there’s no slack in the subway system, as soon as there’s the slightest delay the whole thing backs up.

2. Train design/rider etiquette – MOVE INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE TRAIN!!!! I know I don’t need to elaborate.

Incidentally, my solution to this issue would be to implement ‘standing room only’ trains. Every third train on the line would have no seats. The cars would have twice as many doors (perhaps where the windows between doors currently are) so that everyone would be only a couple of steps away from a door. Getting rid of the seats and the little walls that frame the doorways would encourage people (hopefully) to move into the train, rather than stand in the doorway.

If you need a seat for mobility/age issues, the next train will have seats again.

I ride the Sheppard line about once a year, and every time I do it’s so empty I think there’s something wrong at first.

I dislike Harris as much as the next guy, but it was the Eglinton west line that he buried, not a York University extension.

3 of the top 4 are Scarborough RT stations. Surely the capacity of the RT is much less than the subway. This might be misleading as to how busy these stations are in relation to their capacity.

This article has a factual error. With its new extension the Yonge-University-Spadina line will be called the Yonge-University-Sorbara line. No reason other than to reach the Sorbara lands in Vaughan.

I’m really having trouble grasping the logic of this article. So what if there are a few stations along the route that are less used. Whether a transit user gets on at a crowded subway station or an empty one, he or she is still getting on the same train. It’s the capacity of the trains that is the real limit causing crowding on platforms. And for junction point stations like Bloor-Yonge, it doesn’t matter that nearby Rosedale’s platform is empty, they can’t transfer off at Rosedale station.

yes, Harris fill in the extension heading to York U and decided to build Sheppard instead.. apparently to appease friends of his, but we’ll probably never know. i wonder how different the TTC would be now had The Idiot Who Sold The Cash Cow 407 not killed the York extension in favour of Sheppard…
