Last week, while on a leisurely stroll through Mississauga’s J.C. Saddington Park, Jamie Banks witnessed a heart-stopping sight. A tiny gosling, which had been separated from a larger group of geese, chirped in terror as it was carried downstream and away from its family.
When Banks realized the gosling was headed for a sewage grate, he acted fast. The 27-year-old musician (he played in local bands The Vulcan Dub Squad and Dance Electric) clambered down to the water and stretched his arms out, hoping to grab the baby bird. Then he fell in.
A women’s boxing group that was practicing nearby gasped audibly when they heard the splash, then stopped to watch as Banks emerged from the waist-deep water, the gosling cupped safely in his hands. From there, he sprinted back to where the gosling’s mother was honking aggressively. As Banks leaned over and released the gosling back onto the ground, one woman gushed, “You’re a hero.” We’re inclined to agree.
