There’s an omnipresent man at City Hall who’s often right in the centre of controversy—and it’s not Rob Ford. Mike Toolaram is a towering security guard regularly posted in the council chambers, and if you look closely, you’ll notice him in the background of nearly every council photo, poised for action like some kind of civic Batman.
The one-man phalanx plows through the media horde when the mayor is trying to walk the 25 feet from the elevator to his office. He’s there to keep unruly protestors from disrupting city business. And on bad days, he sees himself on Jimmy Kimmel’s show because the mayor walked into a camera.
Under typical conditions, City Hall is a sleepy beat marked by ribbon cuttings and proclamations. But Toolaram rises to the challenges of patrolling Rob Ford’s City Hall. He doesn’t speak much—good security guards aren’t supposed to be the centre of attention—but he’s always there, going beyond the call of duty and protecting a special mayor in special circumstances. We wish he didn’t have to do his job as well as he does.
