It’s all about context. If they’re jaywalking recklessly, that’s their fault. Could also be the driver’s fault in any of these situations. The cops have got these details, but the folks on the sidelines blindly pointing fingers probably don’t.

These people are stupid and insulting. Slut Walk is about combating the idea that a women/man can “protect” him/herself from being raped, and gives no responsibility of preventing rape to the actual people attacking men/women. It’s about fighting rape culture and victim blaming. A victim of a car crash won’t be told they’re lying or just regret what happened if they get hit by a car when they’re drunk. Being told to wear reflective clothing if you’re walking in poorly light areas in early morning is just safety prevention. There are human factor issues like contrast, ability to discriminate objects in the environment, driver expectancy, and possibly glare, that lend themselves to situation where the driver had almost no chance to see the pedestrian in time to stop. By making this glib analogy, these people are glossing over the culture factors associated with denying the veracity of an incidence of sexual assault. Or they’re just stupid and have no critical thinking skills.

The typical downtown pedestrian has ear buds blasting, face buried in a comms device and is dressed like a ninja. The cop is only trying to help them help themselves. Bring back Elmer the Safety Elephant and send this crowd,what’s left of them, back to Grade 1 where we all learned to stop, look and listen. That said, there is no excuse for leaving the scene.

I don’t know where these pedestrians were hit, but if they were crossing the street legally, the drivers should have been looking for them.

On the other hand, I fully agree that jaywalking in the dark, while wearing dark clothing, is stupid.

I walk city streets for kilometres every day, I also need to drive to work. I consider myself to be a pedestrian advocate. When I am driving I do everything possible to obtain full vision of everything around me and watch every rule out there and mind my manners around people, cars, bicycles. I drive to work in the dark and I have been startled by cyclists without lights and by J-walkers playing frogger, twice I thought I was going to kill someone and image the fear for months. Pretty much every day I have a moment of terror when someone appears suddenly. It is everyone’s responsibility to do what they can to stay safe and help keep others safe. If I am aware I am wearing dark clothes I take extra care to cross at lighted areas. Maybe the officer’s comment was boneheaded, but we can all chip in to keep ourselves and others safe, it’s not hard.
