As admirable as it is for its emotional and sexual frankness, Sarah Polley’s sophomore effort can also feel as conflicted as its Parkdale-dwelling heroine. Michelle Williams stars as Margot, a young writer whose dissatisfaction with her perfectly sweet hubby Lou (an unschlubby Seth Rogen in the film’s best performance) fuels an intensifying attraction to Daniel (Luke Kirby), the rickshaw driver–cum–sensitive artist type who lives across the street. Polley and Williams work hard to give Margot a considerable degree of complexity, but the character gets hazier with every bad decision she makes, as do the movie’s objectives.
