Next Wednesday, Sept. 12, Yours Truly (229 Ossington Ave., at Dundas St. W.) is hosting a one-night modern Thai dinner with Bangkok-born guest chef Kiki Sontiyart. Sontiyart (who moved to Toronto as a teenager) did a three-month stage at Noma (a two-Michelin starred restaurant in Denmark ranked the best in the world) before settling in her current job in the kitchen of another Michelin-starred restaurant in Copenhagen, Kiin Kiin Modern Thai Cooking. Yours Truly chef Jeff Claudio previously interned at Noma, and when Sontiyart needed a kitchen for her Toronto pop-up, Claudio offered his.
“People are getting excited with places like Khao San Road, which is doing flavours closer to what we have in Thailand, not the red pad Thais and the bland curries,” says Sontiyart, who’s back in town visiting family. “It’s great, but there are still a lot of interesting dishes that haven’t made it to the Western world.” She says our Thai salads are lacking and is considering making a winged bean salad for the dinner. “It’s complex, with a lot of ingredients like toasted coconut, shrimp, pork, sliced lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves.” The five-course dinner is $110 (there are 40 seats) and comes with drink pairings and snacks. More details can be found on the restaurant’s Facebook page.—Karon Liu
