Good news for Bloor West Village and Junction inhabitants: Frank and Mirella DiGenova, owners of neighbourhood favourite Butcher by Nature, are teaming up with pitman Marcus De Simone to open a smokehouse. Marky & Sparky’s Smokehouse (520 Annette St., at Runnymede) will take the DiGenova’s certified organic, naturally raised meat (from their shop right across the street) and turn it into delicious barbecue.
On the menu: Baby back ribs, brisket, whole chickens, wings, pulled pork, rainbow trout, and slow smoked tomato chowder. All of the sauces and rubs will be made from scratch, and sides include fries, slaw, baked beans, potato salad, and smoked jalapeno cornbread. Customers will be able to cast votes for a ‘meat of the week’ with the popular choice ending up on the menu.
Scheduled to open for the end of March, M&S will start as a take-out operation with limited seating (a larger dining area is in the works), and anyone lucky enough to live in the area can potentially look forward to barbecue delivery. —Rebecca Fleming
