With his Larrivée guitar, retro ’stache, and awesome Twitter feed, charismatic Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield inspired millions of earthlings to dream of the stars. During his five-month mission, the International Space Station commander, who took the helm in March, employed all manner of social media to reveal the mysteries of space: videos about crying in zero gravity, a musical collaboration with the Barenaked Ladies and the Wexford Gleeks, a lively Reddit chat, and, most famously, a music-video cover of David Bowie’s Space Oddity (viewed some 19 million times). Down-to-earth even when he was 350 kilometres above it, Hadfield’s surprisingly intimate photos—of big cities, farms, mountains, volcanoes, and heart-shaped inlets—reminded us that it really is a small world.
